Working the Scene

Portfolio Home

Reflection: In choosing a “scene to work,” these two giant developments in the North Hollywood Arts District are something I enjoy walking through, just seeing the progress of construction amidst an already bustling community.

The first shot, “Construction,” is probably my favorite, though I think there are some problematic elements in it. I think it fills the frame nicely, though if I would’ve just leaned to the left a few inches more, it would’ve been better. It also has frame within a frame elements and scaffolding itself is like a grid for rule of thirds. Unfortunately, in this photo and another one – “Leading Lines” – there’s a dark smudge in the top/middle/right that concerns me. I hope it’s not something about my lens.

My second photo – “Security Guard” – has a lot of elements in it, though I think it’s a nice example of viewpoint. Even with all the scaffolding and raw construction, my eye is always pulled to the slightly obscured security guard flashing me some signs.

In the second edit, “Leading Lines” offers a nice pull to the horizon, with apartments on one side, power lines on the other, drawing the eye toward the hills.

I noticed how many of the pics that made my second edit, were shots from my “first position,” and the ones in the first edit came with my second 10/20 steps. One, the light was better in my “second position” and I feel like I was making more conscious decisions about the composition based on what I saw from my the first 10 shots. There are some worthwhile shots in there, mostly because they led me to a better idea, if that makes sense.

Lastly, from the last assignment to this assignment, what I felt was a bit easier was getting different shots. I feel like I chose a better “studio,” one, but also that I noticed more of what was right in front me than I previously did.
